A Few Favorites: Art

0

I have come to really like art. This wasn’t always the case. When I was younger and I would be taken to an art museum, I thought it was so boring!  Well maybe it was ok – for about 10 minutes.  After that it was just a bunch of paintings!  As I grew older I began to appreciate art more. It also helped that I personally got into graphic design (I have even done small amounts of professional design). Now I really like going to art museums.  I have been blessed to visit amazing museums around the world – including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Louvre, and the Vatican.

As I have grown I have come to understand more about art’s role in the world. Sometimes it is selling products while other times it is subversive. Art can be entertaining while at the same time inspiring.  Ultimately, I know that God is the Creator, and I love that He gave humans the ability to create and be creative.

One of my favorite art pieces is by my friend Jorge Carracedo, an artist in Spain that I met while on a mission trip there.  He is a devoted follower of Christ and was a member in a church plant there.  I have about 7 of his pieces in my house, and each of them speak to the human condition, and our longing for more.  Not all of his art is religious, but it is about the ache that we feel as humans.

The piece included with this post is called “Come” – which means “come (to me)” in English and “Eat” in Spanish – Jesus is the bread of life. This piece speaks to me, and to the longing in my soul. I love the artist who painted it and follows Jesus. I love the creativity and colors and how the invitation of Jesus is for the whole world.  I love the longing I have for the Creator – so deep that I would walk out on the water and overcome my fears. I share it with you today.

What about you?  Do you like art?  Do you have a favorite piece?  Share in an email or in the online comments.

And maybe find a simple way to be creative.
