This entire month I will be talking about Favorites, and this week I will be talking about some of my favorite verses: Romans 8:28-39. I won’t be writing out all the verses, so it might be good to look them up!
Even before I knew the Bible that well, I loved these verses. When I gave my life to Christ in 9th grade, I started reading the Bible. When I got to Romans, chapter 8 got a lot of underlining and highlighting. I found that really following Jesus changed my selfish choices and gave me a much better attitude – but it didn’t change the fact that life has problems. In fact, being devoted to Christ gave me a few new problems: finding time for reading the Bible, sharing my faith and facing rejection, and being stretched by God to new levels – to name just a few. “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love Him.” Even the trash that life and people are putting into my life can be recycled by God – He will use even the bad things to help me grow closer to Him.
These verses in Romans really helped me, and through high school I had these verses in my pocket. Yes (for those of you who live in the digital age), I actually printed out the verses on paper and put them in my pocket! I took them out and read them over and over when life was tough. “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” I am God’s child, God is for me, I do not have to be afraid.
Life is hard. I still have these verses memorized and frequently recite them. When life is hard – really hard – it is tough not to ask, “God, why is this happening?” “Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?” This verse reminds me that God loves me even through the pain. It also helps me put my troubles into perspective – my life may be tough, but I am not being persecuted or threatened with death! It helps me pray for my Christian brothers and sisters who are actually facing these troubles every day.
“I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.” When the dark and doubts come, I have a choice. Will I believe these verses? Will I believe that God is with me, and His love is stronger than hate, and nothing can be against me, and He will grow me through the struggles? I have made that choice, and lived out the truth of these verses, and God has grown me stronger and stronger.
These are some of my favorite verses. I know they are true not just in my mind, but because I have personally experienced their truth. I have risked and trusted God in the dark, and found He is still by my side, guiding me forward.
How about you, what do you love about these verses? What are your favorite verses or favorite Bible story? I would love to hear your verses, and why they are special to you. Please share a story on the website or Facebook or Twitter!
