Do you remember the names of all the US presidents? How about all of the California missions? Or the order of operations for a math problem? Maybe some of you do, but chances are, most of these facts don’t come back easily. You’d probably have to think about it for a while to remember those facts that you learned in elementary school. Most likely, these are not topics that you regularly think about anymore.

In order to remember something easily, we have to repeat it often. We help our kids remember their times tables or spelling words by having them repeat it again and again. We put up multiplication charts on the wall and calendars with everyone’s birthdays so that we don’t forget

The Bible tells us to do the same with God’s commands. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says, “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

I am especially struck by this verse, “Repeat them again and again to your children.” We must continually speak of God’s grace, of the power of the Holy Spirit, and the love of our Savior Jesus Christ to our children and grandchildren.

Spend time in His Word by doing a family devotional before bed. Listen to Christian music while you’re in the car together and discuss the importance of worship. Praise God and thank Him for your food before you eat, whether you’re at home, at a restaurant, or eating on the go. Let your children hear and see you pray and encourage them to pray too.

We are the best example to our children because we spend the most time with them.  They look up to us as parents, grandparents, and leaders in our household. Our Father God gives us the knowledge that we need, our Savior Jesus Christ shows us how to live, and our Holy Spirit guides us as we lead others.

Repeating leads to remembrance. When we remember, our roots will grow deep in His love.
