Let’s be honest – when most people think about God, they don’t think of “fun”. For some people, fun is something you have to do behind God’s back. At best we think that God sits on the sidelines and smiles while we have fun. Is that really the way God is? NO WAY! God made fun, and God loves to have fun!
In Genesis we are told that God made the world in 6 days. The seventh day was a day of rest (and celebration, because creation was good). Since a Jewish day ends with the night – do you know what that means? It means the celebration and rest started on Friday night – God started creation’s first party! The Lord is the one who told the Israelites to have celebration after celebration, He told them to let the land rest, He told them to have a day every week to stop working and enjoy life. The Israelites had more days of celebration and feast than pretty much any other ancient culture – and those celebrations were commanded by God. God made fun, and He wants His people to have fun with Him!
Jesus came and had fun. He called disciples and they spent day and night together (a 3 year retreat with Christ). He went to a wedding and turned the water into wine. He was accused of not fasting enough and of eating too much. He spent time with “sinners” and celebrated when a lost person came back to the Lord. The early church celebrated the resurrection every Sunday morning, and they ate together a lot! They shared with those in need and gave food to those who were hungry. God made fun – and He wants His people to share with others so we can have fun together. When Jesus walked the earth, fun was all around Him. He taught about God and He was the life of the party. God is NOT on the sidelines – He is in the middle of the celebration!
God made fun. God wants us to have fun. This means following Him and His way for life. Real fun is not in disobeying His rules – the consequences always catch up to us. Real fun is the joy that comes from following Jesus – and that fun has no regrets. You can wake up the next day and have more and more. God made fun. God is fun! Let’s live out fun in our smiles, activities, and joy from following Christ. Let’s walk with people in pain and share God’s real love and care for them. Let’s invite them to the dance that started with creation. God is still celebrating, and He is inviting us to have fun with Him. Let’s dance!
