Super Bowl Sunday is this week! Are you excited? If you aren’t, I want to let you in on a (widely known) secret – the Super Bowl isn’t about football. For many people, of course, it is about the football game. But add in the commercials, the halftime show, the food, and the parties and you have a day that is about more than football. Over 60% of our country will watch this game – this is a national event!
Check out these numbers:
- The game will be viewed by more than 190 million Americans, most will view the game in their home or in the home of a friend – with about 43.3 million parties thrown
- 160 million pounds of chicken wings, 139 million pounds of guacamole, and 11.2 million pounds of potato chips will be eaten by Americans
- 48 million Americans will order takeout food, with a total of $15.5 billion spent total on the Super Bowl
This is not just a game – it is more like a national holiday! The halftime show gets a lot more attention and advertisers spend (a lot more) money. For some, the commercials are the best part of the day. This is a day where most of the country is connecting with others, especially neighbors and friends. This a special day – like the 4th of July – and we need to be aware of this as Christians.
The Bible says, “Make the most of every opportunity” to share Christ (Colossians 4:5). Well – this is a BIG opportunity! Invite some people over to your house for the game. Don’t preach at them, just have a good time together. Or see if you can go to another house, and bring the dip! It isn’t about the game, it is about being together and joining in – as followers of Jesus – into this “national holiday”.
Pray. Enjoy the day. And share the joy of Christ.
