Last Sunday our church family had a congregational vote on buying the new property. We had a lot of good discussions, and a lot of good questions. It was a great time to understand the decision and risk we are making together as a church. We also spent a good amount of time in prayer, and heard the story of how God had opened door after door to give us this opportunity. After praying, we voted, and the vote was unanimous – in favor of purchasing the property.
Before we voted I gave some teaching, part of the same teaching I give in our membership classes: we are voting as members of the church, but this is not a democracy. This is the Kingdom of God. In a democracy the highest will is the will of the people. In the Kingdom of God the highest will is the will of the King. We are followers of Jesus – we pray for His Kingdom come and His will be done. We vote not to get our own way, but because we believe that God’s children united in prayer have a better chance of hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Together we discerned God’s will for Covenant Grove Church – He is calling us to purchase this property, and to do the work to take care of this property and buildings, and to use these gifts and tools to reach more people with Him. God is not giving property to our church. God is giving our church property for HIS MISSION. This is a risk – just like when we started our church plant in the middle of the recession. We took a wise risk in prayer, following Jesus, and so many lives have been changed. Our prayer (and we are praying a LOT) is that this wise risk will result in the same Kingdom growth. It is all about the Kingdom – may His will be done!
