What’s Your “Thing?”
When I look at animals and the sea life in the ocean, I am amazed and comforted. I wanted to write my blog today, about animals, because that is how I feel God most. It may seem strange to some people, but we all have that “thing” that makes us feel the closest to God. I know for some, it is nature walks, hiking, or fishing. Others it is sitting quietly with a good book, or even going on a long run. For me, it is animals.
There has always been something in me, ever since I was little, that was so fascinated by them. I feel so close to God sitting next to my doggy or looking at different animals He has made. A few weeks ago, my husband and I took a trip to the aquarium. We saw hundreds of different types of sea life and how different organisms work together to survive. I couldn’t help but think the whole time “Wow, God made all of this. The huge whales and sharks to the tiniest little jelly fish and even smaller plankton.” When I see animals, I am reminded that God made all of them, and if He cared enough to make the tiniest little animal, then I KNOW He cares for me. Matthew 6:26-30 says this. “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?” This has been a verse that my mom gave me, when I was little, to hold onto. When I start to feel anxious or worried, this is one of the verses I go back to. The birds don’t worry about if they have enough food for tomorrow, or what clothes they should wear, so why should I? If God can take care of these things, He surely can take care of me. Now, that is something special!
Another crazy thing I think about when I see animals is how they all know what to do, without anyone really teaching them. I was watching a show on National Geographic about whales, and how the same kind of whales in different parts of the world behave differently. It was so interesting, because an Orca whale that lives in New Zealand, catches their food completely different than an Orca that lives in Norway. You would think, that since they are the same animal, that they would all behave the same, but that isn’t the case. They must adapt to their surroundings and environment to survive where they are, and they had to figure all of this out without anyone really showing them. But the craziest thing to me, is that this is how God wanted it to be! He knew how every living this must work together and that was His plan from the beginning for us too! In Romans 8:28 it says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Now, I know this verse isn’t necessarily about animals, but it gets me thinking. God has a purpose for everything on this earth. You, me, animals, plants, and all living things He created. He has a purpose for why He made whales behave differently in different parts of the world, and He most definitely has a purpose for our lives as well. What I’m saying is that He made all things work together how they are supposed to, and when I am reminded of that, by seeing how animals live, it comforts me because I know He has a plan for my life, just like He does all the animals of the world. He wants us to trust in Him and live for Him according to His purpose for our lives. I encourage each one of you reading this, if you haven’t found that “thing” that makes you feel closest to God, go find it! Try out a nature walk, take a trip to the mountains, or go pet some adorable animals! When you can see something or do something that brings you closer to the Lord, it is an amazing feeling. Having that reminder, that God cares for you and loves you is a wonderful thing, and once you find it, go back to it, over and over again. Bring your Bible and sit with God, read the truths He gives us, in a place where you feel Him most!
