There are so many lessons to learn about evangelism from Jesus.
First, He sends them – we have to remember that we are sent by Christ to the world. So often I forget that, and I am asking God to be with me during my day – when He is asking me to follow Him into the world, and to the lost. (He is also being an incredible leader here, teaching them how to witness before He even ascends.)
Second, He gives them authority and strategy. They are not supposed to go to the whole world…yet. There is a lot here about the mission of Christ, His call to Israel, and His role as a prophet – but it is enough for us to understand that we can be wise with our witnessing, and use strategy in how we talk to others. He gives them authority to cast out demons and heal the sick, authority to proclaim. We have the Holy Spirit, and we have His authority. So often I don’t live like I have that power.
Finally, Jesus gives them comfort. They WILL suffer – that is assumed. But they will be given words to say. They can’t take extra food or money – because they are to be known for their hard work, and God will provide people to give them food and shelter. This is a radical trust – a faith they learned and continued to live even as Jesus ascended.
This is what it means to be a “fisher of men and women” – this is what Jesus told His first disciples He would teach them to do. He is still teaching us, and we have so much to learn.
