Jesus spoke in parables. These were to help people understand by making a point from everyday stories. These stories were not always easy to understand though. Sometimes the meaning or meanings were very clear, other times – the only thing you could figure out was that you couldn’t figure it out!
What were you supposed to do? Go ask Jesus for more help. Jesus told this parable of the 4 soils to the entire crowd – but only the DISCIPLES came and asked Him for more information. Jesus makes a point – they are given the secrets of the Kingdom – because they asked. The offer was for everyone – but only those who realized they need help, and came to God, got even more information. That is why Jesus is quoting Isaiah, about how we see but don’t understand. That is also a great connection with the 4 soils – the growth I experience is based on how I receive the Word of God – from Jesus. If I receive it with joy – even through persecution and suffering, with a deep root, fighting against Satan, and ignoring the deceit of wealth and the world – then my life will be fruitful, full of love, joy, and peace.
I have to understand that I don’t understand, and constantly and humbly go to Jesus – and follow Him.
