One of the things we often forget is that Jesus traveled – a lot. In just this chapter He moves from Judea to Nazareth, then all around Galilee and the surrounding areas. His message: Repent, for the Kingdom (the reign) of God is at hand (or near). Jesus was on the move. You could just hear His message, get a miracle, and be done – but that was not the same as following Him. Jesus was on the move. He called disciples to follow Him, learn from Him, and be on the move with Him.
Following Jesus is not a “sit still and be comfortable” proposition. Of course we need times to rest, be still in God’s presence, and pray. Then we need to rise up, accept the mission, and follow where Christ is leading. Otherwise we are just the people in the towns who like the teaching, want the miracles, and cry out for food…otherwise we are not disciples. The disciples LEFT their homes and comfort, lived out the teaching, were an active part of the ministry of the Lord – and changed the world.
