Jesus is the Healer. Matthew groups a whole bunch of stories of Jesus healing, and lessons along the way. Jesus is willing to heal people. Sometimes we wonder why He doesn’t heal everyone…His goal was not to heal every person at every stage of history, but to bring about the new creation where there will be no disease.
These healings have lessons in them. The centurion realizes who Jesus is – that Jesus has authority and doesn’t need to touch his servant. Jesus uses this occasion to tell about how universal His message is – many Gentiles will be in the Kingdom, many from Israel will not.
Today there is so much pain in the world, and we can ask, as the Bible writers often do, why doesn’t God stop it? Where is God? We can look at the ministry of Christ – He reached out, touched people, and helped them. We are His followers, Christ is in US. It is our job to reach out and touch the outcasts, to fight the pain of this world, and to tell the world about the death He died – He lives in us and He makes us stronger for the storms of this world, and it gives us secure hope that He is coming back and will wipe every tear from our eyes.
