Matthew 9:1-17

0

What would it have been like to walk with Jesus?  What was He like?  These three stories give us a lot of insight into who He is.

Jesus deeply cares for people.  He didn’t just want to heal this man, He wanted to heal and forgive His sin – to get down to the core issue this man was dealing with.  This also became a lesson for the people – to know who He really is.

Jesus calls the unexpected, and He defends the ones who follow Him.  Matthew would not have expected to be called by Jesus, and no one else would have expected Jesus to call Matthew.  But Jesus can see the heart, and what a difference Matthew has made on so many – including the Gospel we are reading right now.  And Jesus defended Matthew when he was being attacked verbally.

Jesus’ life was marked with joy.  He taught “blessed are those who mourn”, and there was mourning in His ministry.  But Jesus was not somber; He was full of joy!  His disciples, quite unusually, did not fast (they did after He ascended).  The ministry of Jesus – God on earth – was marked with joy!

These are reminders for me of the Lord I love, the Savior I follow as my King.  I want to know who He really is, and to become more and more like Him.
