Wisdom is more than just a thing we acquire – it is part of the very nature of God. Wisdom has been personified in Proverbs already – calling out to the simple to gain wisdom. This is happening again in chapter 8, but there is more. Wisdom is pictured here as the instrument or architect of creation, part of God’s nature through which He created the world. Verse 23 is better rendered “from everlasting” (NLT has “ages past”). In the New Testament, John chapter 1 and Colossians 1 talk about Jesus, the Logos, through whom all things were created; they probably have Proverbs chapter 8 in mind, and see in Wisdom a foreshadowing of who Jesus is (though in Proverbs it says Wisdom was formed or made; Jesus was not made – He is God).
All of this leads us to see that wisdom is not just a thing we have – it is part of the very nature of God. God is calling us to Himself, to be like Him, to know Him and imitate Him. As we follow Wisdom, we come home to God, the Maker of all.
