What is always interesting to me about this chapter is how it starts. Lemuel’s mother, a woman, tells him not to waste his time on women. Then she goes on to tell him how to find a noble and godly wife – who is worth more than any amount of riches. This is so typical of the proverbs! We need wisdom to discern the truth here – don’t waste your energy chasing women – you have a kingdom to run. But the one woman of noble character is worth more than chasing riches or more power – she is worth spending your time on and pursuing, for she will bless your life as you rise and call her blessed. Be wise in love.
Most of this chapter talks about the wife of noble character. It is an incredible poem and description of a godly woman who works hard, honors God, takes care of her family, and is a blessing to all around her, especially her husband and children.
Some have asked – where is the teaching for a godly man in the book of Proverbs? Well, in chapter 1, the book begins with a father teaching his son – so 30 chapters of Proverbs is about teaching men how to be godly and good husbands! Of course, the entire Bible has lessons for men and women – we all need to love and honor God, work hard, be wise, choose our friends well, and make a difference in life. God calls us to choose the way of wisdom.
