Reading through the Bible, we see example after example of the followers of God meeting the needs of those around them- Jesus wasn't the only one! Jesus does tell His followers to serve others, though, and leads the way in showing them how and when. In John 6 we see Jesus feeding a crowd, He heals people physically and restores relationships, and as things progress, we see the disciples stepping out and doing these things as well.

This past Sunday, my whole family had the opportunity to serve together at Fight Hunger. We've participated in this event almost every year, and it's been an amazing journey! When our kids were first able to join in, they needed a lot of supervision to ensure they were following the guidelines (and not making a mess). As they've grown older, they've moved from needing Mom or Dad with them the whole way to only needing an eye kept on them. Now we've done this enough times that they can be active participants on their own! We were still there together, but now my kids are learning how to serve as part of a church family too. Just as Jesus taught His followers to be God's Kingdom workers, our church is teaching the next generation to be the light of the world! Our youth and kids are seeing the impact that serving has on individuals and communities, and the reach they can have regardless of age.

If you haven't yet, find somewhere to serve more regularly! Take it one step at a time and grow into it, just like my kids have. Volunteer at a Love Modesto event, or sign up at the Gospel Mission. The Savior of the world will be with you every step of the way as you work to meet the needs of His people.

Serve together, grow together, celebrate together!

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28
