Start Small
By Rachel Garcia – Kids Minister
It’s a new school year and many of us are getting back into the rhythm of drop offs and pick ups, helping with homework, and packing lunches. Maybe you’re also attending soccer games or gymnastics classes or piano lessons. As parents and caregivers, we want our kids to learn, grow, and succeed. We encourage them to do their best and support their endeavors.
Above all else we want our kids to be like Jesus. We want them to be kind, grateful, loving, and have a heart for serving others. We pray with them before bed and read a daily Bible verse in the morning. We go to church every week and sing worship songs together in the car.
Maybe you don’t always do these things and that’s okay. It’s never too late to start adding in these spiritual habits and making them a part of the rhythm of your lives.
Sometimes we have good intentions, but we don’t know where to begin. You might be thinking, “I want my child to serve in the community, but I don’t know how.” To help out, I’ve compiled a list of ideas that your kids can do to serve and make an impact.
Start small and try out one of these ideas just once a month (or even every other month):
· Pick up garbage at a park.
· Make cookies and give to a neighbor.
· Do yard work for a grandparent.
· Donate supplies to an animal shelter.
· Make “Blessing Bags” to keep in your car and give to those in need.
· Take treats to a police or fire station.
· Send a letter or care package to active military members.
· Make crafts for a retirement home.
· Send an encouraging note to a family member.
· Make bookmarks for your class.
· Donate to Toys for Tots or and “Angel Tree”
· Help plant in a community garden.
· Pray and send letters to missionaries.
Remember, it’s not about getting everything done. It’s about having a heart like Jesus and helping your family to take one next step at a time on their journey of faith.
“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” 1 John 3:18
