You’ve probably heard the children’s story about a particularly ravenous caterpillar. This tiny creature is born and sets out to fulfill his needs. He’s looking for nourishment and starts out small. As the days continue his appetite has not been satisfied and he begins to add more food to his meals each day. He eventually gorges himself on so much decadent food that he makes himself sick.
After making these mistakes he wakes up on a Sunday morning and begins to make better choices. He satisfies his appetite with a nice green leaf, the type of nourishment that his body truly needs. He then takes time to rest.
It is in this time of restoration that his transformation begins. He wakes up refreshed and has become a beautiful butterfly. Now the world can see what he was made to be.
Hunger is a feeling that we’ve all experienced. We can nourish ourselves with food that satisfies what our body needs, however, there is a type of hunger that goes deeper than the physical aspect. There is a hunger — a desire really, to fill the emptiness that resides in our hearts. This emptiness was brought into our human lives when Adam and Eve took those first bites of forbidden fruit that they thought would satisfy them.
Oftentimes we find ourselves longing after the decadence of the world to fulfill this desire. We think that having the biggest house, the fanciest car, the trendiest technology, the next best anything will be what makes us happy and satisfies our hunger.
The world will never satisfy our needs because we were made to be nourished, loved and fulfilled by something so much better, our Savior Jesus Christ.
We are called by God to be transformed into who He made us. When we are filled by the Holy Spirit, experiencing the deep love of Jesus, and resting in the presence of God, our transformation can truly begin.
In Romans 12:1-2 the apostle Paul writes, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Are you ready to be filled by the true nourishment your heart is longing for? Turn away from the emptiness of worldly desires. Make the choice to rest and fill your heart with the love of Jesus. Be transformed into who God made you to be.
